I wonder what’s up with this test mule.

Kinja'd!!!

There was this other one with a different color bed, too.

Maybe HD Hybrid?

Could be. I wonder how much the fuel savings would be . I’d be interested to see a hybrid version with a Cummins, too.

I suspect it’d depend greatly on the duty cycle.

For urban/suburban duty (as with maintenance trucks, as well as people commuting in a HD, which absolutely happens), it could help a lot, there’s a lot of kinetic energy available to harvest, and a lot of mass to get moving again.

For highway duty cycles, if done well, it could help a gasoline engine a lot, by preventing it from operating in extremely low load regimes, and using that energy during periods of extremely high load.

However, many systems aren’t done well and don’t help much in highway cycles. And, even a well-done system won't help a diesel much here (because low load on a diesel is still fairly efficient).

Composite bed material testing maybe

The gas version would be just like the 1500 hybrid with the Hemi. A diesel hybrid could finally surpass a Semi-truck for hauling power

That’s what I was thinking.  These beds may have outlasted their last cab chassis and have been transplanted to the newer cab.  That would explain the colors being off.
